Assignment 1

Assignment 1: Learning Development Portfolio

Task 1.1: The Technology Starting Point

Figure 1

Figure 1 shows the tools and applications that I initially use.

"A PLE puts students in charge of their own learning processes, challenging them to reflect on the tools and resources that help them learn best." (Educause, 2009)

At the beginning of this semester, we were asked to develop a Personal Learning Environment (PLE). I used Microsoft PowerPoint to create my initial PLE as I am familiar with this application and I think I can handle it in an appropriate way. As seen in the above picture, I was exposed to a limited number of computer applications and tools. Among those applications, Prezi and Ning were quite new to me.

I found Ning particularly interesting as it enables members to form groups and communicate through using it as a platform, which is really convenient and easy. Resources were uploaded on the same day after each tutorial, it allows us the opportunity to revise and refresh our memories whenever we want. However, since all members in the group are able to see each other's comments, shyness and fear of making any grammatical or logically mistakes prevent me from commenting on the posts, and at the same time create a barrier for me to engage in the communities of practice.

Task 1.2: Presentation of  the Learning Development Portfolio

Figure 2

Figure 2 displays the most updated version of my personal e-learning environment.

The diagram above displays a new PLE of mine. Those words in dark red such as Blogger, Wikispaces, Evernote, etc. are the new applications I currently use. Initially, I planned to use Prezi to create my e-portfolio for Task 1.2. But later, I started questioning myself: my members and I already used Prezi for the presentation of assignment 3, should I use another application or just stay with Prezi? At first, I admitted that I did feel reluctant to learn a new application, as it is both time and energy consuming. Then, I realised I should walk out of my comfort zone, and finally I chose to use Blogger.

I started teaching myself how to use Blogger by following some online tutorials and by clicking onto different buttons which appears on Blogger. Repetition indeed is needed for all different types of learning (Bruner, 2010), especially when I am a starter who started from knowing nothing about this application.
